Commentary
This Ramayana verse names four circumstances: calamity, financial distress, danger, and the end of life. In each, a person of fortitude reflects with his own judgment and does not sink into despair. Dhriti is not passive patience here; it remains joined to deliberate thought, expressed by vimrishan and svaya buddhya. The verse does not promise escape from every difficulty or say that lack of composure is the sole cause of failure. Its narrower claim is that reflective steadiness prevents inner collapse even at life's end.
