Commentary

This inspiring verse is spoken by Hanuman in the Sundara Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. When faced with the seemingly impossible task of finding Sita in Lanka, he momentarily feels despondent. However, he quickly rouses himself with these words, reminding himself that 'Anirveda' (non-despondency, or enthusiasm) is the root of all success. It highlights that a positive, undefeated attitude is the fundamental engine that moves any action towards a fruitful conclusion. The shared meaning renders anirveda as enthusiasm and positive energy, but the word is a negative compound: nirveda is despondency, and anirveda its absence. Hanuman speaks this line at his lowest moment in the Ashoka grove, and its force lies in refusing to despair rather than in summoning enthusiasm.
