Commentary
The opening mantra of the Atharvaveda’s Bhūmi Sūkta names six powers that uphold the Earth: vast truth, mighty cosmic order, consecration, austerity, brahman or sacred formulation, and sacrifice. The supplied meaning recasts these as universal truth, strict discipline, vows of service, a life of austerity, profound wisdom, and continuous action. Some of those are modern interpretive substitutions: service to all, continuous action, and profound wisdom are not separate expressions in the Sanskrit. The second half calls Earth the mistress of what has been and what will be and asks her to make broad space for us. Reading this as ecological responsibility and moral harmony is a valuable application, but the mantra’s literal imagery is ritual and cosmic rather than a direct environmental programme.
