Commentary
This profound verse from Chanakya Niti identifies the essential elements of a meaningful life. It posits that peace of mind is the greatest form of spiritual discipline, surpassing physical penance. Contentment is hailed as the highest form of joy, suggesting that happiness comes from within rather than from external acquisitions. Conversely, 'Trishna' or insatiable desire/greed is described as the most debilitating disease, as it prevents any sense of peace or satisfaction. Finally, it establishes 'Daya' or compassion as the highest form of Dharma, emphasizing that our ultimate duty lies in kindness toward all living beings.
