Commentary
This is the final verse of the Rigveda, and the decision to close the oldest of the Vedas with a prayer for concord is itself part of its teaching. The verse asks for unity in three deliberate steps: ākūti is intention or resolve, the first impulse that precedes action; hṛdaya is the heart, the seat of feeling and loyalty; and manas is the mind, the faculty of thought and deliberation. By asking that all three be samāna—same, equal or held in common—the ṛṣi suggests that lasting togetherness cannot rest on agreement at any single level, for shared aims collapse without shared feeling, and shared feeling drifts without shared thought. The closing phrase yathā vaḥ susahāsati states the purpose plainly: that you may dwell well together, su-saha, in genuine fellowship rather than mere proximity. The verse therefore seeks a deep commonality of resolve, heart and mind. In modern application, such unity need not erase individual differences: people may retain distinct roles, gifts and viewpoints while their deeper resolve converges on a shared good. The supplied meaning develops this into mutual cooperation, equal treatment and continual work for social progress; these are natural applications, but they are not separate clauses in the mantra. The Prime Minister's message similarly carries the verse into public life, treating collective resolve and unity as the foundation on which a nation's progress and prosperity are built.
