Commentary
This verse defines the Goddess as "Nishesha-deva-gana-shakti-samuha-murtaya"—the physical embodiment of the collective power of all divine beings. In a modern context, it resonates with the idea that the progress of a nation is the result of the collective "Shakti" of its women. It suggests that women are not just a part of the world, but the very force that pervades and sustains its various fields of action. The verse belongs to the Shakradi Stuti, the hymn the gods raise after Mahishasura is slain, which is why it speaks of her as holding the massed power of every divine being. The phrase ātmaśaktyā describes the power by which she pervades the world, while the preceding compound presents her as the embodiment of the assembled powers of all the gods. The verse does not itself set up a contrast about whether that power was lent or independently possessed.
