Commentary
This meditation verse invokes Katyayani, the sixth form of Navadurga, in a radiant martial form. The shining sword in her hand and the tiger she rides express courage, power, and readiness to confront destructive forces. Chandrahāsa, literally a moon-bright blade, also lends the image a calm luminosity: divine strength is presented as purposeful, not uncontrolled. For a devotee, the goddess represents the resolve needed to cut through fear, confusion, and injustice. The prayer seeks auspiciousness from a power that protects by combining clarity with fearless action. One detail is worth keeping straight. Śārdūla means a tiger, and śārdūla-vara-vāhanā therefore gives her the best of tigers as her mount, although iconography and most Hindi renderings give Katyayani a lion. The verse also names her weapon before her deed — the moon-bright Chandrahasa first, dānava-ghātinī only at the close — so the blade's calm brightness is established before what it is used for.
