Commentary
This Rigvedic mantra asks that we follow the path of well-being like the Sun and Moon, and that we come together with people who give in return, do not kill, and know. The instrumental forms punardadatā, aghnatā, and jānatā describe the companions with whom the speakers hope to meet; they are not presented as qualities already possessed by the speakers. Both anucarema, 'may we walk,' and saṅgamemahi, 'may we come together,' are first-person plural optatives. The mantra is therefore a shared aspiration rather than advice addressed to others. Social harmony is a fitting application, but the text expresses it through the company sought as well as the path followed.
