Commentary
This subhashita presents four valued attainments not as accidents, but as consequences of the qualities that sustain them. Lakṣmī, representing wealth and prosperity, is said to follow satya, truthfulness and integrity; kīrti, or lasting reputation, follows tyāga, the willingness to give and serve beyond oneself. Vidyā grows through abhyāsa, repeated practice, reminding us that learning becomes real only through disciplined engagement. The final pairing brings the teaching into the realm of action: buddhi, practical intelligence and sound judgment, follows karma, the work through which thought is tested and refined. Together, the four lines reject the desire for results without their foundations. Prosperity, esteem, knowledge, and wisdom become durable when they arise from truthful conduct, generosity, sustained practice, and implementation.
