Commentary
This Atharvavedic verse recalls the Earth on which earlier forebears acted and on which the gods drove back the asuras. Vicakrire says that the ancestors performed or accomplished their deeds there. The next line names Earth as the dwelling place of cattle, horses, and birds: vayasaḥ here means birds. The prayer is that Earth grant the speakers bhaga, good fortune or a share in prosperity, and varcas, radiance or vigor. The mantra thus holds memory and blessing together: the ground that bore the deeds of the past is asked to bear good fortune for the present. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared this mantra in honor of the motherland as a sacred land of spiritual discipline and worship, of courage, strength, and universal welfare, with the wish that this holy soil of great heritage and ancient culture keep everyone blessed with happiness and prosperity.
