Commentary
The verse identifies two complementary sources of military effectiveness: uplifted morale among the warriors and sound material resources. Udīrṇamanasaḥ describes minds that are elevated, eager, and confident; equipment alone cannot create that condition. At the same time, courage without suitable vehicles and means may be unable to act effectively. Its broader lesson is that resolve and capability must support one another. Whether in defence or another collective undertaking, motivation becomes reliable only when preparation, tools, and disciplined coordination give it practical form. Two things are named and only one of them is material. Vāhanāni are the mounts and transport, but udīrṇa-manasaḥ describes the state of the fighters' minds, and the verse sets the two side by side as though they were the same kind of asset. The certainty in dhruvaṁ jayaṁ vadet is unusual for a text as hedged as the Shanti Parva, and it is granted only where both conditions hold together.
