Commentary
The opening verse of the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram locates Somnath in the beautiful and pure land of Saurashtra. Jyotirmaya describes Shiva as formed of divine light, while candrakalāvataṃsa evokes the crescent moon worn as his ornament. The speaker does not merely praise this form from afar, but seeks refuge in the compassionate Lord who grants devotion. The imagery turns light into a spiritual orientation: clarity dispels fear and devotion steadies the mind. Somnath's long history of destruction and renewal gives that symbolism a later cultural resonance, though the verse itself is fundamentally a prayer of surrender.
