Commentary

This subhashita describes a ruler whose subjects remain devoted, who is intent on protecting them, and whose own disposition is disciplined or humble. Such a ruler, it says, attains abundant śrī, prosperity or good fortune. The supplied meaning expands these compact qualifications into service as sacred duty, good governance, social progress, public trust, honour, and recognition. Those are modern applications rather than separate ideas named in the Sanskrit. The verse itself supports the core connection between care of the people, self-discipline, their continuing attachment, and the ruler’s prosperity.
