Commentary
The verse is spoken directly to Yudhishthira and summarises the prabhāva, the efficacy or beneficent power, of the rakṣā. In this chapter, rakṣā is not protection in the abstract but the protective band or thread used in the Rakshabandhana rite. A compact series of compounds names its blessings: jayada, giving victory; sukhada, giving happiness; and putrārogyadhanaprada, giving children, health and wealth. The repeated suffix -da, 'giver', and -prada, 'bestower', make the second line sound like a formal blessing. Together, the promised gifts cover success, emotional well-being, continuity of family, bodily health and material prosperity. The surrounding Bhavishya Mahapurana narrative presents Krishna explaining the Rakshabandhana observance to Yudhishthira. It first recalls the protective bond associated with Shachi and Indra and then turns to the rite performed on the full moon of Shravana. The supplied meaning appropriately identifies rakṣā as the Raksha Sutra and condenses the verse's list of benefits. The verse itself does not define the modern brother-sister celebration; its immediate focus is the auspicious power attributed to the ritual protective thread.
