Commentary
This stirring call to action from the Mahabharata is an exhortation to overcome lethargy and despair. It commands the individual to 'Utthatavyam' (rise up) and 'Jagritavyam' (wake up), and to engage themselves in 'Bhuti-karmasu' (works that lead to prosperity). It emphasizes the importance of a positive and determined mindset ('Bhavishyati' - it will happen), suggesting that success is inevitable for those who work with a clear goal and an untroubled mind. It comes from the Vidula-Sanjaya exchange in the Udyoga Parva, where a mother rouses a son who has lost and wants to stay lost. That setting explains the form: all three verbs are impersonal gerundives with no subject named, so the demand falls on whoever hears it. The last quarter is the hardest part — bhaviṣyati ity eva manaḥ kṛtvā, having made the mind into the very thought that it will happen.
