Commentary

The verse presents dhairya as more than momentary bravery. It is the steadiness by which thoughtful people cross grief, endure pressure, and continue acting without allowing suffering to define the whole course of life. To “cross” sorrow does not mean denying it; the image suggests moving through it with patience until constructive action becomes possible again. PM Modi shared the verse while remembering Veer Savarkar, applying this quality to a life marked by severe hardship and political struggle. That remembrance is a modern illustration of the verse's broader teaching about fortitude. Sorrow is given a verb of crossing rather than of ending — tariṣyanti, they will cross over — so the verse does not promise that grief is avoided, only that it is passable. The adjective dhīra appears twice, first as nominative plural dhīrāḥ and then as instrumental plural dhīraiḥ. The last quarter uses the related abstract noun dhairyam and widens the idea from steadfast persons to a method: dhairyaṁ sarvatra sādhanam, steadfastness is the instrument everywhere. The source of this verse has not yet been traced.
